How to buy binoculars - the basics

When buying binoculars you will first want to figure out how and where you will be using them. Not all binoculars are good for all purposes. There are certain binoculars that are good for looking at the stars and others that are good for watching birds. Of course there are multi use versions available.

How to Figure out The Numbers

The numbers on the side signify the power of magnification and the diameter of the lenses. For instance lets say the number appearing is 8x 40, you then know that it can magnify 8 times and it has a 40 mm lens diameter. The image quality is inversely proportional to the magnifying ability and would affect viewing as it gets more difficult to hold the binoculars in one position. If you are using them for bird watching then you would probably prefer 8 to 10 fold magnification because of its convenience and ease of use. A pair with a 4 fold magnification is the type that you would use for outdoor sporting events or concerts.

Lens Diameter

The lens diameter is important because the larger diameters would seize more light which improves the image quality and broadens your viewing area. Expressed in angular dimensions the field of view is also shown as the feet-span of the view from one side to another as appears at 1000 yards. As the field of view gets smaller, it becomes increasingly difficult to find what you are looking at.

Price and Quality Are Important

Price and quality will largely depend on the types of coatings on the lenses and prisms. While coatings may have different areas of function, their primary job is to arrest any loss of light due to reflection. The sophistication of the coatings used will make quality and price vary wildly from type to type and brand to brand.

Besides those important features you will want to look at the toughness of the binoculars. If you are only going to use them occasionally then that may not be an important factor, but if you plan on taking them out to concerts all the time or on whale watching boat trips then toughness and waterproof features are going to be important.

It’s important to choose binoculars according to the purpose that they will serve. This is best determined according to the magnification power that the binoculars provide. Binoculars may range in magnification from 6x to 12x. These numbers determine how many times the binoculars magnify an object far away. For instance, if you choose a pair of binoculars that have 9x magnification, that means that you will be able to see objects that are 9 times farther away then you could see with your eye. Though it may seem that binoculars with the highest magnification may be the best ones to choose, that isn’t always the case. Also, if you select binoculars with magnification greater than 10x, you may find that it is necessary to use a tripod as your hands may notice a lot of shaking when trying to focus in on an object. Many people prefer to use anywhere between 8x and 10x magnification.
